Fundamental Problems in Quantum Physics 2022
Second school on quantum foundations dedicated to Prof. GianCarlo Ghirardi.
Quantum Mechanics is undoubtedly one of the most successful theories in Physics. It has explained a wide variety of phenomena and agrees with experimental results. Moreover, the range of applications of the theory is in continuous development and expansion. Nonetheless, there are some aspects related to the core of the foundations of the theory which still motivate debate within the community.
Prof. GianCarlo Ghirardi (1935-2018) was one of the protagonists of this debate, being a leading figure in the foundations of Quantum Mechanics and among the first proponents of the so-called “Collapse Models”, introduced to solve the measurement problem.
The first school was held in Trieste on 19-21 June 2019; it was suspended due to Covid-19 and now it is resumed.
In this second school, we will discuss some of the most relevant topics addressing foundational questions about Quantum Mechanics. Lectures and seminars will be given by leading experts in their fields, and will cover topics such as Collapse Models, Bohmian Mechanics, macroscopic superposition, Quantum Information and experiments to test Quantum Mechanics.
The school is supported by the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi), the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and the University of Trieste.
Registration is mandatory by 12/09/2022 , to be done by sending an email to the following address: joseluis.gaonareyes@units.it. We kindly ask you to indicate your name, surname, affiliation, as well as your arrival and departure dates.
There are no fees: participants will cover their travel and local expenses.
Sandro Donadi, Angelo Bassi, Francesco Cesa, José Luis Gaona Reyes, Laria Figurato (Università degli Studi di Trieste and INFN).
The workshop will take place at Aula A of the Department of Physics of the University of Trieste (UNITS), in Via A. Valerio 2, 34127 Trieste, Italy.

Arrival in Trieste:
Trieste, capital of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, is a well-connected city. Arriving by plane, one can choose to land at Trieste Airport, Venice Marco Polo Airport, or Treviso Airport. In addition, trains operated by Trenitalia travel frequently between Trieste and major Italian cities. Moreover, buses are available for local and regional transport.
Airport transit:
Trieste is served by the Ronchi dei Legionari Airport , the closest and most convenient airport to the city. Visitors can reach the city by either using Bus Line G51 or train.
From airport to Trieste by bus: The bus stops are outside the airport terminal building, on the left. Bus 51 runs from the airport to downtown Trieste. At the airport, bus tickets can be purchased at the Agenzia Turismo FVG on the ground floor or from the automatic machine at the arrivals hall. The cost of bus tickets is around 4 Eur, and have to be purchased before getting on the bus.
Airport Bus E51 Schedule (from Ronchi dei Legionari airport)
From airport to Trieste by train: The train stop is connected to the airport through an elevated corridor. Train tickets can be purchased from the automatic machines in the train stop, or directly from the Trenitalia website. The cost of the ticket from Trieste Airport to Trieste Central Station (Trieste Stazione Centrale) is 4.25 Eur.
From Venice Marco Polo airport to Trieste: Visitors can reach Trieste from Venice Marco Polo Airport by bus + train (look at the Trenitalia website for train schedules). The Mestre-Venezia airport buses take approximately half an hour from the airport to the train station Venezia Mestre, where passengers switch to trains that run direct to Trieste. Train tickets must be validated at the validating machines before boarding trains; fines for carrying non-validated tickets are high.
Arrival at the Units Physics Department:
Tickets for the bus must be purchased in advance, as they are not available inside them. You can purchase them at the main train station in Trieste and at the many local tobacco shops (which are indicated with the symbol T). The cost of a one-way ticket is 1.35 Eur. Remember to validate it at the moment of getting on the bus in the machines located in the interior.
Local Bus No. 17/ departs from Piazza della Libertà (in front of the Trieste Central Station), and arrives at the University. 17/ schedule
Local Bus No. 17: It is better to take it from the start of Via Coroneo (the bus stop is close to the ALDI supermarket). It also arrives at the University. 17 schedule
Covid restrictions
EU Covid Certificate nor Passenger Locator Form are no longer required to enter Italy from other EU Member States or other foreign countries. However, the use of FFP2 masks is mandatory in trains, buses and both public and private transport services. For more information, see the Italian Health Minister Ministry website.
In general, it is advised to wear masks within closed spaces, or whenever a distance of two meters between people cannot be ensured.
